Question

A clerk multiplied a number by 5/1 instead of 1/5. What is the percentage of error?

A

96 %.

B

98 %.

C

94 %.

D

100 %.

Soln.
Ans: a

If the actual figure is x, the error is ${5x}/1$ - ${1x}/5$ = ${5^2x - 1^2x}/{5 × 1}$ = ${24x}/5$, so %-error = ${(24x)/5}/{(5x)/1}$ × 100 = ${24 × 1}/{5 × 5}$ × 100 = 96%.
